Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Rain falls past green maple branches bent by wind above the metal gutter and roof edge of a red brick building under an overcast sky.

Before a contractor can tell you what failed in your central AC and what it will cost to fix, they have to work out what put it there. 112 severe weather events were recorded in Hampshire County, West Virginia between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, storm load is a real variable in how components age, and a contractor working a repair here checks for it before landing on a cause. Refrigerant lines, capacitors, and contactors all carry that accumulated load. A diagnosis that skips that step can misread a worn part as a simple replacement when the underlying stress is still present.

A gray metal cabinet door mounted on a dry-stacked stone basement wall beneath wooden joists, with a conduit pipe entering its top and a leaf rake leaning against the wall to the right.

Ductwork and refrigerant lines in a house this old were put in for a specific system, and that system has had a long time to wear. Half the homes in Hampshire County, West Virginia were built in 1986 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). When a compressor or a control board finally fails in stock like this, the question a contractor has to answer is whether the replacement part is still being made, or whether what is available now fits what the rest of the system takes. If the part is discontinued, the repair scope changes in ways that a visual inspection before opening the unit cannot predict.

The Parts of a Central AC a Contractor Checks First

Isometric grayscale illustration of a cutaway house showing interior rooms, ductwork, an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit on a pad connected by lines.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad at ground level, and is where heat gets shed to the outside air. The compressor lives inside that cabinet and is the part contractors look at early when a system runs but does not cool. A failed compressor or a refrigerant leak at the condenser are two of the more common reasons a central AC stops doing its job.

Inside the house, the air handler or furnace cabinet holds the evaporator coil, which is the piece that actually pulls heat out of the indoor air. A clogged or frozen evaporator coil is a frequent culprit when airflow drops or cooling becomes uneven. The refrigerant lines running between the two units and the expansion valve that regulates refrigerant flow are also points a contractor will check when the system is underperforming.

The drawing shows the general layout of a central AC system, and a licensed contractor determines which components apply to your specific house and situation.

Severe Weather Events in Hampshire County

Storms put a hard load on cooling equipment: power surges, extended run times, and heat spikes that follow outages all push a system toward failure. How often that pressure arrives in Hampshire County shapes how much repair work local central AC units actually see.
