Sizing a central AC system for a Hampshire County home is not a catalog exercise. A contractor has to weigh the local climate against the specific structure, the ductwork layout, and the load the house itself generates. 112 severe weather events were recorded in Hampshire County, West Virginia between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a standing part of the operating environment here, real enough that a contractor factors it into equipment selection, but not so concentrated that it crowds out the other variables. A system undersized because the installer skipped a proper load calculation will underperform regardless of how the seasons run.

A gray metal electrical panel box mounted on a stone basement wall with a conduit running up to wooden ceiling joists, and a metal leaf rake with a wooden handle leaning nearby.

Ductwork laid down for an older furnace or window units was not sized for a central system's airflow, and in much of Hampshire County's housing that is exactly what a contractor finds behind the walls. Half the homes in Hampshire County, West Virginia were built in 1986 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A system installed into ductwork that cannot move the right volume of air will run harder and cool unevenly regardless of the equipment's rated output. Before a unit is priced, a contractor has to measure what the existing runs will actually carry, then decide whether they need to be replaced, relined, or extended.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway single-story house showing interior rooms, attic ductwork and an air handler, connected by a line to an outdoor condenser unit on a pad.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a concrete pad beside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler mounts in a utility closet, basement, or attic and contains the evaporator coil and blower that moves conditioned air through the home. These are the two main pieces a homeowner is buying.

A copper refrigerant line set runs between the outdoor and indoor units, connecting them so the system can function as one. The thermostat goes on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over the whole system. A condensate drain line runs from the air handler to a floor drain or outside, carrying away the moisture the coil pulls from indoor air.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines what fits the configuration of this particular house.
