A contractor called out to repair a central AC unit in Nicholas County has to separate what the system has been through from what actually broke it. 79 severe weather events were recorded in Nicholas County, West Virginia between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a recurring fact of life here, but it is a background condition rather than the primary cause a contractor points to when a compressor fails or a coil gives out. Age, refrigerant management, and whether the system was serviced regularly are what the repair history in this area actually reflects. The weather runs the system hard during cooling season, but worn contacts and neglected filters explain more repair calls than storm load does.

Ductwork routed through a house for one system and later pressed into service for another tends to develop its own problems, and those problems show up as AC complaints. Half the homes in Nicholas County, West Virginia were built in 1981 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor opening a central AC unit here often finds the equipment is not the whole story: corroded line connections and duct joints that were never sealed for the loads they now carry can mimic compressor or coil failure closely enough that a parts order turns out to be the wrong first move. What the opened system reveals about the line set and the supply runs determines whether the repair is a component swap or something that takes longer to sort out.

The Parts of a Central AC a Contractor Checks First

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house showing interior rooms, ductwork and an air handler in the attic space, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by lines at the exterior wall.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and it holds the compressor and condenser coil. These are the pieces a contractor reaches first when a system stops cooling. A failed compressor or a fouled condenser coil are among the most common reasons a central AC quits doing its job.

Inside the house, the air handler or furnace cabinet holds the evaporator coil and the blower. The evaporator coil is where the cooling actually happens at the indoor side, and the blower pushes conditioned air through the supply registers and back through the return. The refrigerant lines and the condensate drain connect the two halves of the system and each can be the source of a problem.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines which components apply and what condition they are in for your specific home.

Severe Weather Events in Nicholas County

Weather extremes put real hours on AC equipment. Surge, heat load, and moisture stress drive the repair calls that follow, and how much of that a system absorbs depends on where it runs.
