Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Rain falls past the roofline and gutter of a red brick building, with a green-leaved tree bending in the wind against an overcast white sky.

Sizing a central AC system for a Jackson County home starts with what the house actually demands, not with a weather record that would justify oversizing. 82 severe weather events were recorded in Jackson County, West Virginia between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an occasional fact of life here, not the dominant load a system spends its years fighting. A contractor quoting an install focuses on square footage, insulation, and existing ductwork, because those are what set the real load. Storm history in this county does not move that number much.

A gray sheet-metal cabinet with a flue pipe rising to the ceiling stands against a stone foundation wall in a basement, with a leaf rake leaning beside it on a concrete floor.

Ductwork laid down for equipment of that generation was designed around different load assumptions than a modern central AC unit carries. Half the homes in Jackson County, West Virginia were built in 1979 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting an installation here has to get into the existing trunk lines and branches and determine whether they move enough air for the new system before the equipment selection means anything. If the ducts are undersized or the routing adds too much resistance, the install scope changes significantly. The electrical panel gets the same look: what the house was wired to handle and what a modern condenser draws are two numbers a contractor has to put next to each other early.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house with a dark shingled roof, showing interior rooms with ductwork and an indoor air handler connected to an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The outdoor condenser unit sits on a pad beside the house and holds the compressor and condenser coil, the mechanical heart of the system. Inside, the air handler mounts in a utility space, attic, or basement and contains the blower fan and evaporator coil. Together these two units do the actual work of moving heat.

A copper refrigerant line set runs between the two units, connecting the indoor and outdoor sides of the system. The thermostat goes on an interior wall where it reads the air temperature and tells the system when to run. A condensate drain line carries moisture pulled from the indoor air out of the house.

The drawing shows the general layout of a central AC system, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to your specific house.
