A contractor quoting a central AC install in Wyoming County starts with the house: its square footage, its insulation, how it sits on the lot. 65 severe weather events were recorded in Wyoming County, West Virginia between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is an event here rather than a standing condition, which means age and installation quality are what determine how long a system lasts and what it costs when it fails. A compressor that gives out in this county gave out because it was undersized at install, or neglected, or simply old.

A gray electrical panel box mounted on a stone wall in a basement with wooden ceiling joists, a metal conduit entering the top, and a leaf rake leaning against the wall at right.

Ductwork laid in for older heating systems was designed around airflow patterns that central cooling does not share, and in much of Wyoming County that original ductwork is still in place. Half the homes in Wyoming County, West Virginia were built in 1974 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor pricing a central AC install here has to assess whether those ducts can move conditioned air through the house at all, or whether the runs, returns, and register placements need to change before a new unit is worth putting in. The electrical service is the same question: what the panel was built to carry and what a modern condensing unit draws are not always the same number. Those two assessments, ductwork and electrical, are what shape the scope and the price before any equipment gets ordered.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric line illustration of a cutaway house showing interior rooms, ceiling ductwork connected to an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit linked by refrigerant lines.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad beside the foundation, and houses the compressor and the condenser coil. Inside the house, the air handler or furnace holds the evaporator coil and the blower that pushes conditioned air through the home. These are the two main pieces a contractor sets in place.

A refrigerant line set runs between the indoor and outdoor units, carrying refrigerant through insulated copper tubing that passes through the wall. The thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over the whole system. A condensate drain line also runs from the air handler to carry away the moisture the coil pulls from the air.

The drawing beside this text shows the general layout of a central AC system, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your house.
