Heavy rain streaks fall past wind-blown green tree branches above the gutter and roofline of a red brick building under an overcast sky.

Sizing a central AC system for a house in Harrison County means accounting for what the air outside has actually been doing. 150 severe weather events were recorded in Harrison County, West Virginia between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a regular feature of the operating environment, not a rare interruption, and a contractor who ignores it when calculating load and specifying equipment will leave a system that runs near its ceiling more often than it should. That extra strain shows up in compressor wear and shortened equipment life. A tight, well-matched install is how a contractor builds that margin in from the start.

A large blank gray panel or door stands against a dry-stacked stone foundation wall under wooden floor joists, with a metal pipe behind it and a rake leaning at right.

Ductwork sized and routed for a furnace does not automatically carry a central AC system without adjustment. Half the homes in Harrison County, West Virginia were built in 1965 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A house from that era was built around heating, and whatever ductwork runs through it was laid out with that in mind. Where returns are too few or supply runs are too long, a contractor has to decide whether to work within what is there or to modify it before the new unit can do its job. The electrical is a separate question, drawn from a panel that may have been extended more than once since the house was built.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric cutaway illustration of a single-story house showing interior rooms with furniture, overhead ductwork, an indoor air handler unit, and an outdoor condenser unit connected by lines at the side of the building.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad at ground level, and holds the compressor and the condenser coil. Inside, the air handler mounts in a utility closet, attic, or basement and contains the evaporator coil and the blower that moves air through the home.

The thermostat goes on an interior wall where it can read the living space accurately and gives the homeowner control over the whole system. A condensate drain line runs from the air handler to a nearby drain, and refrigerant lines connect the indoor and outdoor units.

The drawing shows the standard layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each one is positioned and connected in your house.

Severe Weather in Harrison County

Stress on a cooling system comes partly from what the equipment is built to handle and partly from what the local climate actually delivers. Harrison County's weather record shapes how hard a central AC unit has to work, which makes it directly relevant to any installation decision here.
